Famous Devon Figures Volume II gathers 60 short biographies of people connected with Devon, from Charles Dickens, Joshua Reynolds and Captain Robert Falcon Scott to Peter Cook, Tommy Cooper and Isadora Duncan. Compiled by Ian L. Handford, available as a printed A4 book of 132 pages.
The biographies run in alphabetical order, from Teignmouth harpist Elias Parish Alvars to football commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme. Writers, scientists, artists, churchmen, entrepreneurs, medical specialists and adventurers all appear, and around a quarter of the entries come from the twentieth century, with names from theatre, film and broadcasting including Roy Castle, Richard Dimbleby and Lord Bernard Delfont.
Where a commemorative plaque or memorial exists for a person featured, the book names it so readers can seek it out for themselves. Some were unveiled by Torbay Civic Society, others by professional institutions and associations.
The biographies began as a weekly column in the Herald Express 'Bygones' section, which the author wrote for five years from 2002 while Chairman of Torbay Civic Society, amassing over two hundred stories of Devon residents and visitors. The first volume followed in 2007 as a numbered limited edition of 600 and is now out of print. This second volume contains 60 newly researched biographies, illustrated with photographs, many supplied by families and trusts.
