Compiled by Ian L. Handford, President of Torbay Civic Society, this is the third and final book in the Famous Devon Figures series.
The biographies run in alphabetical order, from politician and philanthropist Thomas Dyke Acland to writer Constance Wilde, wife of Oscar Wilde. Writers, explorers, entertainers, clergymen and campaigners all appear, among them Colonel Percy Fawcett, Max Bygraves, Billy Dainty, Jeremy Thorpe, Sir Peter Scott and J M W Turner.
Each biography draws on archive material and, where possible, new information from family members or friends of the person featured. This volume includes a piece on Marilyn Monroe, published after decades spent trying to establish proof of her visit to Torbay.
Twelve Torbay Civic Society blue plaques connected with people in this volume are pictured with their addresses, among them George Bridgman, Charles Kingsley, Reverend Henry Lyte and Wilfred Owen.
This volume is dedicated to Sheila A Hardaway, founder, first Chairman and first President of Torbay Civic Society, and is supported by her estate.
The biographies began as a weekly column in the Herald Express, first running for five years from 2002 while the author was newly elected Chairman of Torbay Civic Society. Around 200 stories were researched in total, enough for four books; the first 52 were published as Volume One in 2007, a further 60 as Volume Two in 2020, and this volume completes the series with a further 60. The author describes this as his last book in the series.

The biographies run in alphabetical order, from Teignmouth harpist Elias Parish Alvars to football commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme. Writers, scientists, artists, churchmen, entrepreneurs, medical specialists and adventurers all appear, and around a quarter of the entries come from the twentieth century, with names from theatre, film and broadcasting including Roy Castle, Richard Dimbleby and Lord Bernard Delfont.
Where a commemorative plaque or memorial exists for a person featured, the book names it so readers can seek it out for themselves. Some were unveiled by Torbay Civic Society, others by professional institutions and associations.
The biographies began as a weekly column in the Herald Express 'Bygones' section, which the author wrote for five years from 2002 while Chairman of Torbay Civic Society, amassing over two hundred stories of Devon residents and visitors. The first volume followed in 2007 as a numbered limited edition of 600 and is now out of print. This second volume contains 60 newly researched biographies, illustrated with photographs, many supplied by families and trusts.
